what is CBT-I?

CBT-I is a multi-factorial approach to treating insomnia using behavioral lifestyle changes, learning to stop and challenge negative thoughts, and learning ways to relax your mind and body.

what are the benefits of CBT-I?

CBT-I is considered the front-line treatment (even prior to medication) according to the American College of Physicians. Treatment is often short-term (typically 4 to 6 sessions) and has minimal side effects. Research has shown improvements in sleep from CBT-I are equal to and in some cases better than the best sleeping pills without feeling the groggy effect the next day. What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. EMDR is a model of psychotherapy designed to help a patients reprocess traumatic memories and stress reactions. A traumatic memory is a memory that is not just recalled but stored in the body and when one remembers the memory they have a physical reaction and a sense of reliving the event. For example, recall the last birthday party you attended. Most likely you remember some images and people who were at the party but you would not relive the event. However, traumatic memories cause the person to feel anxious and fearful like they did when they were in the traumatic event. EMDR can help to process these traumatic memories and help the person to not have the negative emotional and physiological response when reminded of the event.
